During her “Eras Tour” performance in New Orleans on October 26, Taylor Swift surprised her audience by performing an unexpected song with a special guest.
Swift began performing a version of a song as wasn’t from her vast repertoire of 11 albums near the end of the show, during the portion of the set that fans have dubbed “surprise song o’clock.”
Swift has a practice of performing a few songs outside of the typical set list at each show during her touring career. The surprise songs on the “Eras Tour,” which began in Arizona in March 2023 and will end in Canada in December, have mostly been Swift tunes that fans love, frequently mashups.
However, Swift opened her surprise song set on Saturday night by performing a few bars of “Espresso,” one of the official summertime songs by Sabrina Carpenter.
“I want to see how loud you can sing this song because I’m going to sing a song that’s not mine but is for someone I truly adore. Swift remarked on stage, “It’s been stuck in my head,” before performing the acoustic guitar-accompanied chorus of “Espresso.” Carpenter has opened for the “Eras Tour” and is presently touring with her CD “Short n’ Sweet.”
There was still more fun to be had. According to fan-posted performance videos, Swift phoned Carpenter on speakerphone while she was at the mike.
Following a brief exchange of words, Carpenter went onstage with Swift to continue the rendition of “Espresso.” Swift performed the guitar and provided background harmony as Carpenter sung the melody. Swift questioned, “I was wondering, I wanna do the thing, can I do it?” prior to the second verse of the song.
As Swift began to sing, Carpenter concurred, saying, “I’m working late because I’m a singer.” That stanza then turned into a mashup, fusing the song “Espresso” with the song “Is It Over Now?” from “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” in typical Swift way.
Swift and Carpenter then performed a duet rendition of “Please Please Please,” another song from “Short n’ Sweet.”
The mashup madness ended fittingly with the lyrics, “Let’s fast forward to 300 takeout coffees later” and “That’s that me espresso” spliced together.
